This is the original Airfix Motor Racing Set released in 1962 and was a simple figure 8 set consisting of 10 x 45° bends, 11 x straight tracks and a terminal straight. The cars being a green Cooper F1 and red Ferrari F1 with matching standard controllers. It also came with track barriers, which fitted into sockets moulded on the track edge, original style bridge supports, banking bricks and a bottle of BP oil. All of this was fitted into cardboard trays in the box. The original cars had no chrome parts or windscreens. This set sold for £5/17/6d (£5.88)
By 1963 the set was called MR11, the number indicating the track length in feet and cost £4/19/11d (£4.99) which was cheaper than the 1962 price due to the revised track pieces. You now only got 1 standard straight to match the terminal straight the rest being replaced with 5 of the new double straights. Also 4 90° inner curves replaced 8 of the old 45° curves.
By the time the First Edition catalogue was published the packing had been changed from the cardboard trays to a moulded plastic insert but still priced at £4/19/11d.
By the time of the Third Edition catalogue the price had increased to £5/6/6 (£5.33), still cheaper than the original release.
By early 1968 at the latest the bridge supports had changed to the latest flat style first shown in the Third Edition catalogue and the Terminal track had also changed to the new side entry one. During 1968 the branding changed to Motor Ace and the cars to the new Hi-Speed versions and a new price of £5/15/0d (£5.75) still cheaper than the original release price. By the end of 1968 the set had received the New Super Controllers. It was Probably around this time that the packaging was changed to the moulded polystyrene base but unlike most manufactures using this option they kept the cardboard box base.
The final changes happened during the MRRC time of selling Motor Ace, this being 1 of the 2 sets they kept selling. The set now had the black plastic track and the cars had changed to the Hi-Speed BRM Plus and Matra Ford Plus F1 cars.
This set lasted the whole life of Airfix Motor Racing, Airfix Motor Ace and Aifrfix MRRC Motor Ace,, the only set to do so.
