Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe 1/32nd Scale Scratch Built Slot Car

Started 7/10/2020

This scratch build project uses the Shelby Cobra Coupe kit by Lindberg , details here, and parts from my spares boxes.

Looking at the kit I decided to try and do a quick build and use the lower body moulding as the cars chassis. having decided to take this route I selected one of my open frame motors whit rear axle bracket and the rear axle and crown gear already attached.

The rear axle brackets were opened up and made wider. I then made the hole in the floor pan longer and wider to accomodate the crown gear. I was going to use a set of MRRC plastic wheels as these are large at the rear as per the kit wheels but these proved to be to small. Searching through my wheels I finally settled on a pair of MRRC presses steel wheels that push on to the axle, which needed trimming to the correct length. The front wheels are Penelope Pitlane 15" classis alloy and again I had to the trim the axle I found in my spares box. The front tyres are Penelope Pitlane classic tyres and the rears are a pair of urethanes designed to fit the sixties Revel cars. The front axle is just sitting in the bracket designed to hold the kit axle. The guide is a standard clip in Scalextric one with the wiring taken from a Scalextric Powersledge as this saved me having to get the soldering iron out and soldering eyelets to the wires. A hole was drilled to take the guide flag and a slot cut in front of the hole for the wires to pass through.

A quick test was done with the motor held in place with some duck tape, the motor will be hot glued in place, which showed that the car would run.

As far as I can tell the body as depicted by this model only raced at Daytona and Sebring as most of the cars had a spoiler on the back of the car, and as this was going to be a quick build I didn't want go the the effort of building this. As I am basing all my real car builds on the UK and Europe, mainly Le Mann's for the sports cars, I have decided to go for a basic livery. As an American car it will be blue with white stripes and just racing numbers. being a cobra it should probably be a metallic blue but as all I have at the moment is two shades of plain blue it is getting the darker of the two.

Two coats of primmer followed by two top coats, there are a couple of small blemishes that will need to be cut back but the should disappear when the clear coat gets applied.

Painting done the motor was glued in place and wired up, quick test on the track and all seems ok.

The cockpit glazing was glued in place with normal plastic cement to the roof and with Micro Kristal Klear around the visible edges. As the glazing isn't the best of fits the Klear was also used to fill the gaps with a second application later.

The light have been painted silver along with the fuel caps and the bonnet air vent area has been painted aluminium. Once dry the light were given a coat of Klear.

Still need to paint and fix the rear panel in place and decide if I will need to screw the body together.
